Steps
Tips
- What "HD" means here: X stores multiple versions of each video. xi always picks the top one — typically 720p or 1080p for original uploads.
- Source matters: If the uploader posted a low-res video, no downloader can magically make it HD. xi gives you the best that exists.
- Check the file: After downloading, check the video's resolution in your gallery or player to confirm you got the HD version.
- Big files on mobile: HD videos are larger — make sure you have storage space and use Wi-Fi for long clips.
How X Compresses Video (and Why It Matters)
To understand what "HD" really means on X, it helps to know what happens between upload and your download. When someone posts a video, X doesn't store the original file as-is — it re-encodes it into several versions at different resolutions and bitrates.
The original upload might be a pristine 4K file from a camera. X compresses it aggressively because it serves billions of video views; bandwidth costs are enormous. The top version X keeps is usually 1080p at a moderate bitrate — good, but already a step down from the true original.
What xi downloads is that top version: the best X itself retained. We can't recover quality X threw away during its own compression — nobody can. But we can make sure you get the top rung instead of the 480p version the X app might show you on a slow connection.
The practical takeaway: if a video looks soft even in "HD," the cause is almost always X's compression of the original upload, not your download. Screen-recorded or re-uploaded copies (common on repost accounts) look even worse, because they've been compressed twice. Always download from the original post when possible — that's where the best version lives.
